Best external storage for everything

Hey all,

I just got a new Mac Mini so I should also update my external storage (my 6TB Lacie drive is 7 years old!). I keep all my iTunes, photos, some short films, device backups, etc., on it. I'm looking for something fast and quiet (as is possible) and that can hold more than the 6TB drive I have. I've only used G-Drive & Lacie in the past, both performed great. Couple probably also make good use of a connection Hub.

Any suggestions?

. To add to Ron’s excellent advice, you should be using two external dives. One to hold your Libraries and one to backup both the Libraries and the Mac mini.

You dodged the bullet this time with that external drive. Just think about what could have happened, if it had failed with no backup on a second external drive.

If you are not into using Time Machine to backup everything, CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper clones are great options.

I also use CCC to backup my system and also do backups of my external drives. Like @den.thed, I have been using it since version 1.0 and has worked as expected. The advantage of cloning the devices is that it is a mirror of the source and is easily searchable with Spotlight.

I do however still use Time Machine. It's prime use however is to recover from "event issues" such as a bad app update, returning a current project to to a previous state say a few hours ago or a file, and for brain fog issues of deleting a file I may have been working on in which case I can at least get it back to what I had at most an hour ago.

Thanks again for the help, everyone. ONE PROBLEM: I downloaded CCC's trial version and backed up my Mac and the old external drive onto a new drive. I started doing the same on a 2nd new drive (for safety). While the 2nd drive was copying, I went into the 1st drive and found that the deeper I went into the files, the content wasn't there! It's like it only copied so many layers in and then stopped. Their website says the Trial version is the full version.

Any thoughts on what could be happening?
