Hi Runnemede203,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're unable to open pictures sent via text message. It sounds like they may not have downloaded properly. Try restarting your iPhone to see if the issue persists. This can refresh iOS, apps and connections. Here's how if needed: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support.

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

If that doesn't help, try connecting to a different network and have your son send the pictures again. If you were using Wi-Fi, turn it off and use cellular data. Updating iOS may help as well. Here are the steps: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

Take care.
