Keyboard types two different characters at once

Device: mid-2015 MacBook pro

Certain keys on the keyboard are combined, i.e., when I press 'o', the output is 'oy' and when I press 'y', the output is again 'oy'. I turned on the keyboard viewer, and I see that when I press one key, either 'o' or 'y', both the keys are pressed together in the keyboard viewer.

Same thing is happening with

'h' and 'l'

'n' and '.'

'6' and '9'

'/' and '\'

spacebar and down arrow

"=" and up arrow

I am not sure if its a hardward issue or something else. I am using this device for the first time. The OS was reinstalled recently.

Try using an external keyboard. Does the external keyboard have the same issue? If so, then you likely have a configuration issue or an issue with some third party software.

If an external keyboard works normally, then you most likely have a hardware issue with the built-in keyboard which will need to be repaired.

Troubleshooting Two Keyboard Characters:

Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

(Applies to Intel-Based Macs Only): Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. Updates), system configurations (i.e. for keyboard) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Try performing each thrice. It may take sometime, being certain you have the time to perform these resets. Using an external to perform this, being your internal one is giving you the issue.
