When I try to add someone in iMessage the number shows as red

Just because your contact has an iPhone doesn't mean they are using iMessage. That sounds as if it might be the problem. If that's the case, you will as Dallen_Frutchey alluded to, need to set up Text Message Forwarding from your iPhone.

This can happen if you don't have text message forwarding set up correctly with a companion iPhone, or if the recipient of the message is not using iMessage.
