Text messages from a family not received

My granddaughter sends me text messages all the time. Recently, when she sends them, they are never received on my side. We've sat next to each other to confirm the numbers are correct and I've even sent her a response message from an older message she sent. She gets mine, but nothing new comes to me. She did get a response recently from some unknown person replying to her original message to me. Again, all the phone numbers are correct.

What do you think is happening here and, more importantly, how do we get it working correctly again?

Thanks,

Tom

Are both devices iPhones?

On your phone, go to Settings > Messages. If iMessage is turned on, tap Send & Receive to verify that your phone number is checked as well as your Apple ID under the top receive section.

It is particularly troubling that your granddaughter got a response from an unknown person when you verified that it was sent to the correct number. Typically when there are problems with iMessage not working properly, they can be resolved by shutting off iMessage, restarting phone, and turning iMessage back on, but with an unknown third party involved it may be best to contact Apple directly at this link: Contact - Official Apple Support

Jim - thanks for your response. Both are iPhones, and both were receiving text messages both ways until recently. Her messages are being sent to my correct phone number but never received. They are received by another person unrelated with obviously a different number. All messages settings are normal. We’ve tried removing and re-adding my number but same result.
