Muffled microphone on AirPods Pro 2

Hi,

I've seen this asked before multiple times and multiple times there is no real fix. I’ve had this problem basically out of the box. Any time I would talk on the phone or send audio messages, I assumed the muffled sound was from being outside. I have never and still never had this problem with my original AirPods Pro.

Things that I’ve done.

my AirPods have the latest firmware.

my iPhone has the latest update.

I've forgotten and reconnected my AirPods Pro.

I've cleaned them (they are not dirty).

I've restarted my iPhone.

What is going on?! Exceedingly frustrated by lack of support with this issue.

Just worked through the same issues and performed all of the steps others have suggested (cleaning, disconnecting, resetting, etc.). Come to find out the issue seems to be with the auto switching of the microphone feature that is defaulted on with the AirPods Pro 2. I fixed the muffled issue by changing this setting to Always Right Airpod. Also tried on Always Left with the same result (obv). I believe this is the only actual fix as I’ve seen the attempts of keeping one AirPod in the case but I don’t think that person said it made a difference, but I don’t use my AirPods that way so I didn’t even attempt it for myself because I’d never be alright with that being the fix.

Sunmed up. Pick a microphone side and change the setting in Bluetooth - AirPods - Microphone. Hope it helps!

I just figured this out...I think! Sound great now.

You have to be on a phone call or Facetime call. Once you're on call, swipe down control center and MIC MODE should be at top right. It defaults to Voice Isolation mode. Select Standard and that should sound way better! Looks like "Wide Spectrum" is an option that is currently unavailable but coming soon for group mic mode. Hope this helps.

Hello jengelz,

It may be beneficial to try testing the microphone of your AirPods individually one at a time to see if the issue is happening with one of them or both.

If possible, also try connecting the AirPods to a different device to help rule out any possible issues resulting from the device they're regularly connected with,.

Resetting the AirPods can also be a helpful step to try in this type of situation to give them a quick refresh. This page has the needed steps for that process: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support
