My Macbook Pro (2014) is running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 with Apple Mail 8.2. I can no longer get email. I believe that to get it I need to update my Apple Mail with a macOS update, but I'm seemingly maxed out. Can't I update my OS (and thus apple mail) on my old Macbook Pro?
Earlier Mac models
Your 2014 MacBook Pro is capable of upgrading to at least Mojave, if not Big Sur.
Keep in mind you will not be able to use multifactor authentication with your Apple ID to access the App Store unless you insert the code at the tail end of your password until you upgrade to Sierra or later.
Upgrades are annual updates that go by distinctive code names like the ones above.
Updates are interyear updates to upgrades that include security updates, and updates to Safari for that upgrade.
Safari is not up to date on anything but Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura at this point.
Mojave is the end of the line for 32 bit applications. You will need to upgrade your entire application library before going into Catalina or later.

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 10.14.6
It will place a copy of the installer in your Applications folder and you can use that to create a bootable installer.
