Track activity with desk treadmill

I recently started using a standing desk treadmill. Since my hands are resting on my desk when walking none of my activity from my Apple Watch is tracking. I tried putting my phone in my pocket but that’s not working well either. Any advice?

iPhone 13, iOS 16

Greetings Maria_Mac_22,

We'd like to provide you with a few details that can assist you with receiving the Move and Exercise credit, while using your Apple Watch:

"Every full minute of movement that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise and Move goals. With Apple Watch Series 3 or later, your cardio fitness levels are used to determine what is brisk for you. For wheelchair users, this is measured in brisk pushes. Any activity below this level counts only toward your daily Move goal.

To make sure that you earn Exercise credit during walks, allow the arm with your Apple Watch to swing naturally. For example, while walking your pet, let the arm with your watch swing freely while the other holds the leash.

If you need both hands while walking, for example to push a stroller, you can still earn Exercise credit with the Workout app. Open the app on your Apple Watch and tap Outdoor Walk. The Activity app relies on arm motion and an accelerometer to track movement, but the Workout app can use the accelerometer, the heart rate sensor, and GPS."

Hi! with using the "indoor" walk function on the watch, we get "credit" for the workout in time, but it doesn't manually add any steps to the total step count for the day. I have also tried to not wear the watch, but add the workout manually from a 3rd party app, and it will essentially do the same thing. Bring over the time and add it to the move ring or exercise ring but not the total step count.

If I add step counts in the apple health app, those then don't come over for my watch summary of the day.

Really frustrating that we don't have some sort of workaround for this. Especially since the treadmills out put mileages walked. Should be a way to manually enter this, assume a step count for the mileage even, and move on. :(
