Can Not Save a GarageBand File

Another user asked the question that I wish to ask again. I have had no problem with saving my GarageBand files ...UNTIL NOW.. . The suggested solution involves shutting down the computer...but won't that result in the loss of the edited work?

Are you getting any error messages, when you try to save the song? if yes, what is the message?

Which version of GarageBand are you using? On macOS 10.13 High Sierra you could still be using the older iLife version GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5, or are you using the more recent GarageBand 10?

Have you closed all other apps, that might be hogging the memory?

Where is your project stored? In your GarageBAnd folder or on an external drive?

is it just the "Save" that does not work, or is GarageBand completely unresponsive?

If GarageBand is still responsive, try to save the song from the Share menu (in GarageBand 10). You could save at least each track separately as an audio file try to save the project as an iOS project, GarageBand 10 can can convert the iOS project back to a GarageBand for Mac project.

Hi PereDC,

We appreciate you reaching out to us.

We’d like to start by setting your expectations. If you are looking to avoid troubleshooting steps that may result in some loss in your progress, that greatly reduces the steps we can perform.

A great first step to try is to check if you can save your project on a different folder, or an external drive.

Also, try to change the name of the file.

The steps below may help.

  1. "In GarageBand on Mac, choose File > Save As.
  2. In the Save As dialog, enter a new name for the project, then click Save."

You can use the article below as a reference.

Hello PereDC,

Let's check to be sure that you have enough available storage on your Mac. Depending on exactly what happens when you try saving the project, storage space could be a factor. Follow the steps in this link to check your storage: See used and available storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

  1. "On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click Storage on the right, then click All Volumes.
  3. Move the pointer over a color to see the amount of space each category uses. Light gray space represents free storage space."

If storage space doesn't appear to be a cause, let us what happens when you try saving a project, including any error messages you see.

Cheers!
