External hard drive could not mount - (“disk2s2”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.)

Hi there!

I wondered if anyone could kindly advise me on some issues I'm having..

I've been attempting to connect my hard drive to my Mac (running macOS Monterey version 12.1) and it will no longer mount. The error message that pops up says the following: "Could not mount “disk2s2”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.)"

The hard drive will only show up on my disk utility and looks in appearance as follows -

External

G-DRIVE mobile USB-C Media

> disk2s2

  • (I have no idea what the "disk2s2" bit means so if anyone can explain it would be much appreciated!)

I have run first aid on G-DRIVE mobile USB-C Media which was successful.

However when I run first aid on "disk2s2" the following results pop up - please see the screenshot attached.

It's unusual as this particular hard drive has connected with no problem in the past:

A number of days ago I managed to connect it with some success - it took some time and did mount but only allowed me to access a small part of the files which I know are stored on the drive.

Since this occasion it no longer mounts and repeatedly I experience the above described issues.

I have tried it on my Mac laptop also and experience the same results.

I know that the hard drive in question is at least 10 years old, however there doesn't appear to be any obvious signs that's it's necessarily broken.. it still lights up when I connect it to my Mac and whirs away quietly like it always has.

Any advice or help would be greatly received!

Thanks,

Jo

I have three solutions for worrisome drives. Of course you need to make backups of your data if you can. But for truly obstinate drives:

  1. Use a Windows machine and reformat it to NTFS and then back to my Mac.
  2. Use a partitioning app such as GPartEd to reformat it in either a Mac or Windows format and then back to my Mac.
  3. Replace the drive.

Unfortunately, there do come those times when the drive has failed. Only you can decide that. If you have no backups, I suggest you start making them for ALL important data regardless of where that data resides.
