Where can I get "Install macOS Ventura.app" to create a bootable installer for an Intel Mac?

The HDD on my 2017 iMac is potentially corrupt and I'm attempting to restore it. I'm trying to follow the Support documentation to create a bootable installer Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support. I want the bootable installer because every time I restart the iMac in Recovery Mode and try to install Ventura it has to redownload the OS and that takes hours.

The only Mac I have to download Ventura from the App Store is an M1 MacBook so it's not downloading the correct Intel version of the OS. I've also downloaded InstallAssistant.pkg from some random source but the command found in the support article is suggesting I need "Install macOS Ventura.app".

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.3

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.3.1

Scanning for 13.3.1 installer

Install failed with error: Update not found

BUT,

this one is found and downloads;

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.4.1

Scanning for 13.4.1 installer

Installing: 8.0%>>>

Install finished successfully

After completion, this file appears in the Applications Folder

Install macOS Ventura.app Jun 15, 2023 at 21:00 11.83GB

Where does the documentation exist for macOS specific binaries like this? Where did you learn about this? Are you just inspecting your /usr/bin or wherever directory and thinking, "hey that looks like an apple specific tool. i think i'll pass a --help flag and see what pops out"?

Generally, in Unix, you type man and the name of the command to learn about it:

man softwareupdate

Where did I learn there was a softwareupdate utility? I can’t remember. It has been around for a long time. The fetch full installer options are fairly new, and I learned of its existence on some blog or Mac help site. Again, can’t remember.

Yeah, I don't know either...

You know, it sure would be nice to have a website that listed all the macOS' with a Download and Install buttons next to each one of them...

Maybe that would make things TOO EASY and the reason that Apple and other entities haven't done it...

Oh yeah, one other thing I learned today after making bootable USBs for Monterey and Ventura on my Mac Mini M.2 (2023)...and trying numerous times to make one for Catalina...

Any macOS, Big Sur and earlier can not be used to make a Bootable USB on Macs with the M.1 or M.2 chips...

After finding that out, I went over to my 27" iMac (2019) and I was able to make the Bootable USB, first time around...

But hey, I have way too much time on my hands so, no big deal, wasting 5 hours...lol...

You can't download a version of macOS earlier than what a Mac shipped with.

Because a 2019 iMac originally shipped with macOS 10.14 Mojave

But hey, I have way too much time on my hands so, no big deal, wasting 5 hours...lol...

Next time, ask. 😎
