Sending messages from HomePod Mini

I have purchased a mini for my son’s room and I’m trying to overcome some interesting quirks. I’d like him to be able to send me an iMessage. I created a new contact in my iPhone which he was able to send messages to, but only when I was in the house and on the same Wi-Fi network. This is not what I’m after.

I then tried connecting my iPad to the HomePod mini, both of which never leave the house. This seemed to be the solution as the iPad forwarded the iMessage to my iPhone. However, I had to turn off find my IPhone and replace it with my IPad for this to work! This seems incredibly convoluted. Is there a work around for this so I can utilise the iPad but retain my iPhone location?! Any help appreciated

It would work if your son had an Apple ID that you could set up on the iPad. If your son is under 13 you will have to use Family Sharing. The problem is that to send an email, you have to have Personal Requests turned on and for security, only the user with the Apple ID can have their voice recognized to access your personal information. Otherwise anyone that was over could ask to read your messages, reminders, calendars, or notes.
