Apple Watch 8 not Tracking Sleep & Sleep Stages

Hello all,

I have an Apple Watch 8, running 9.5 (at the time of writing). This is paired with an iPhone 14 Pro running 16.5

When I first got the watch, an upgrade from Series 5, the sleep data appeared perfectly, showing stages and tracking correctly. This was working in tandem with AutoSleep which I was previously using. No issues for the first couple of weeks, then suddenly, the Apple Sleep was just showing the block of time my phone & watch were in 'Sleep' Focus, with no information on the stages. Some nights NO DATA is recorded at all. The sleep graph in Health.app is absolutely empty. Other nights I see only the green bar showing time asleep and time awake, but no stages. And that data is absolutely wrong. For example, tracking starts 3h after I have gone to bed. I regurarly sleep 7-8h and the Sleep in Health reports 1-2h of sleep.

Every once in a while everything is tracked perfectly....like every 9-10 days. Last night's sleep was tracked correctly. The night before the graph was absolutely empty. Today the graph is a mess with wrong data, a green bar only, and no stages.

I have tried:

  • Verified all tracking metrics are on and allowed under privacy;
  • Ensured wrist detection is turned on;
  • Kept watch charged (always 100% at bedtime);
  • Made sure Sleep Monitoring is turned on on Apple Watch;
  • Deleted current sleep schedule, turned phone & watch off and on again, then set up a new schedule;
  • Deleting Autosleep from both phone & watch;
  • Turned off 'Track time in bed' on iPhone;
  • Made sure Apple Watch 8 is first in the 'Data Sources' for sleep;
  • Reset the watch entirely to factory defaults, then paired it up again;
  • Turned OFF "Share Across Devices" in Focus (off on ALL devices).

Sometimes it will randomly track again for a couple of nights & then go back to tracking nothing or tracking wrongly.

This is super frustrating as it links into my fitness apps, which all think I am now not getting enough sleep so they adjust metrics accordingly (wrongly).

Any other solutions people have found other than those already tried above?

I'm in touch with Apple Support over the phone for 2 weeks now. Support is super kind and helpful, but they also can't figure it out. The issue has been escalated. Support has done Screen Sharing, checking settings, and adjusting things. I test Sleep for a few nights and then I call back (the same person via a special link) for further troubleshooting. So far, no good.

Any feedback and suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you!

Hi SF-,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having the same issues in 2024 with a Series 9  Watch. But don't worry, and do not lose faith. Mine is now working fine like a charm, spot on, correct, and absolutely great. I spent a lot of time with  Support; the issue was escalated several times ("stairs") with no result. I gave up. But apparently, the problem wasn't with the  Watch/Health app at the time. Maybe, maybe a software update fixed things, but if you are having issues a year after my issues, probably it was not a hardware/software thing. I guess the problem was with my HEART. Later that year I had a yearly heart exam with my cardiologist and he said I had a "somewhat" irregular heart rhithm. A few weeks later, I had a full-blown AFIB (which  Watch detected immediately) and stayed this way for a few months (during that time, sleep tracking was not working). But then I got hospitalised, and the doctors performed Cardio Versio on me (a kind of electroshock under anaesthesia) to bring back the normal sinus rhythm - and they did succeed :) After that day,  Watch has been tracking perfectly sleep and everything health-related. So maybe check with your cardiologist if everything is OK with your heart. Good luck and success.

I have had the same issue. I think I noticed it started a few nights ago when I started listening to YouTube videos with insomnia meditations while I sleep. I’m taking a drug temporarily that gives me some insomnia. I just so happened to notice in my activity tracker that it’s listing the time I was asleep as “Entertainment”. So I wonder if because my phone is registering that I’m in “entertainment” mode that it’s not recording sleep stats perhaps?

Greetings Kostadin,

It sounds like Sleep tracking on your Apple Watch isn’t working correctly. We know how important having a working Apple Watch is for you, and you’re in the right place for answers. Please make sure you verify your settings and schedule:

Verify Settings

  • "Sleep Schedule" needs to be turned On, in:
    • iPhone > Health app > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options
    • Apple Watch > Sleep app > Full Schedule
  • iOS Health > Summary > Sleep: check if the option to "Set Up" is shown.
    • If so, complete the Sleep setup process.
    • If this fails, open the Sleep app on the Watch and complete the setup process there.
  • iOS Watch app > Settings > Sleep > "Track Sleep with Apple Watch" should be turned On.
    • For "in bed" tracking, "Track Time in Bed with iPhone" should be turned On under Health App > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options
  • The Apple Watch should have a sufficient battery charge. If their Apple Watch runs out of battery overnight in their sleep, it is expected that Sleep Tracking may fail.
  • If you have multiple Watches, please ensure Auto-Switch is enabled in the iOS Watch app > All Watches.

Verify Schedule

And one of the following

  • Sleep Schedule set up, and "Use Schedule for Sleep Focus" enabled in Health app > Sleep > Full Schedule & Options
  • Watch Sleep Focus turned on manually for 4 or more consecutive hours

Note: Sleep results ("In Bed" and Sleep Stages data) may take several minutes to come up after disabling Focus > Sleep.

I was having the same issue. I did the below and have had it work (only for 1 night but I’m hopeful).

> Health app

> Sleep

> Data sources & access

> Edit

Then I changed the order of the data sources so the Apple Watch is at the top, then health app, then phone, then clock. When multiple sources are available it will prioritise based on that order.

Hope it helps

Hi all,

I got the sleep tracking working again.

I unpaired the watch from the watch app on my phone :

  1. Go to watch the app in your iPhone
  2. > My watch
  3. > All watches
  4. > Press the "I" icon near the Apple watch in use
  5. > "Unpair Apple Watch"
  6. > Restart the Watch and Iphone
  7. > Pair Watch with iPhone again
  8. > Dont set up focus mode or any other unnecessary modes
  9. > Just set up your bedtime schedule like 22:30 - 07:00 (on your watch)
  10. That did it for me

Since then I had pretty good sleep tracking, including the stages.

Apple Watch Series 9 with software version 10.0.2

IPhone 13 pro with software version 17.1.1

I hope this helps

SOLVED! Was having same issue too and couldn’t seem to figure it out. Was bothered that I had to set up a sleep schedule and not be able to just nap and have it tracked. Use the right button under the dial and select the moon symbol which was previously the dedicated Do Not Disturb button. Now it gives you two options. Select the Sleep option and it will track and give you stats for when you sleep! You can access the app the see different levels of sleep. Good general info. But if you want more in depth graphs and information, I paid a one time $5.99 (instead of all the monthly subscription based apps) for AutoSleep. Great app. A lot of detailed information. Hope this helped!

Apple Watch 8 and iPhone 14 pro, bought at the same time last year. Worked fine collected data every night just fine until a month or so ago I noticed some nights it just says “in bed”. So I’m thinking my health app pulled data from my phone over my watch and that’s why. I turned off collect data from phone while sleeping as in hopes the phone will only pull watch data for my sleep. I’ll try to remember to update if it works.

Hi all,

I need to share that I am experiencing the same issue here. I bought a new Apple Watch Series 9 two weeks ago, and sleep tracking also has issues. It worked the very first night after unboxing, and then from the second night, it started to miss the sleep tracking randomly. I am synced with an iPhone 13 pro, but it seems that others have the same problems with sleep tracking regardless of the phone model.

Devices are :

  • Apple watch series 9 (41) with the latest software - 10.0.2. (21R371)
  • Iphone 13 pro with the latest software - IOS 17.0.3

I've tried so far:

  • Sleep Schedules (alone)
  • Sleep Schedules with Focus Mode
  • Sleep Focus shared across devices
  • Sleep Focus NOT shared across devices
  • Changing Sleep Schedules
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi OFF/ON (on Apple Watch)
  • Synced with iPhone (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on)
  • Not-Synced with iPhone (Wi-Fi only)
  • Updating to the latest software (phone and watch)
  • Always have more than 50% on Apple watch before bedtime
  • Aeroplane mode ON/OFF
  • Wearing the Apple Watch slightly above the wrist(not on the wrist knuckle)
  • Also checked multiple comments/threads and videos online about it, however, my readings are still missing from random nights
  • I've also tried pretty much all of the advice steps from the previous few threads on this page, but sleep tracking does not track some nights.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards Kosta Y.

P.S.

What are the odds, my name is also Kosta
