Apple Watch 8 not Tracking Sleep & Sleep Stages

Hello all,

I have an Apple Watch 8, running 9.5 (at the time of writing). This is paired with an iPhone 14 Pro running 16.5

When I first got the watch, an upgrade from Series 5, the sleep data appeared perfectly, showing stages and tracking correctly. This was working in tandem with AutoSleep which I was previously using. No issues for the first couple of weeks, then suddenly, the Apple Sleep was just showing the block of time my phone & watch were in 'Sleep' Focus, with no information on the stages. Some nights NO DATA is recorded at all. The sleep graph in Health.app is absolutely empty. Other nights I see only the green bar showing time asleep and time awake, but no stages. And that data is absolutely wrong. For example, tracking starts 3h after I have gone to bed. I regurarly sleep 7-8h and the Sleep in Health reports 1-2h of sleep.

Every once in a while everything is tracked perfectly....like every 9-10 days. Last night's sleep was tracked correctly. The night before the graph was absolutely empty. Today the graph is a mess with wrong data, a green bar only, and no stages.

I have tried:

  • Verified all tracking metrics are on and allowed under privacy;
  • Ensured wrist detection is turned on;
  • Kept watch charged (always 100% at bedtime);
  • Made sure Sleep Monitoring is turned on on Apple Watch;
  • Deleted current sleep schedule, turned phone & watch off and on again, then set up a new schedule;
  • Deleting Autosleep from both phone & watch;
  • Turned off 'Track time in bed' on iPhone;
  • Made sure Apple Watch 8 is first in the 'Data Sources' for sleep;
  • Reset the watch entirely to factory defaults, then paired it up again;
  • Turned OFF "Share Across Devices" in Focus (off on ALL devices).

Sometimes it will randomly track again for a couple of nights & then go back to tracking nothing or tracking wrongly.

This is super frustrating as it links into my fitness apps, which all think I am now not getting enough sleep so they adjust metrics accordingly (wrongly).

Any other solutions people have found other than those already tried above?

I'm in touch with Apple Support over the phone for 2 weeks now. Support is super kind and helpful, but they also can't figure it out. The issue has been escalated. Support has done Screen Sharing, checking settings, and adjusting things. I test Sleep for a few nights and then I call back (the same person via a special link) for further troubleshooting. So far, no good.

Any feedback and suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you!

Hi SF-,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having the same issues in 2024 with a Series 9  Watch. But don't worry, and do not lose faith. Mine is now working fine like a charm, spot on, correct, and absolutely great. I spent a lot of time with  Support; the issue was escalated several times ("stairs") with no result. I gave up. But apparently, the problem wasn't with the  Watch/Health app at the time. Maybe, maybe a software update fixed things, but if you are having issues a year after my issues, probably it was not a hardware/software thing. I guess the problem was with my HEART. Later that year I had a yearly heart exam with my cardiologist and he said I had a "somewhat" irregular heart rhithm. A few weeks later, I had a full-blown AFIB (which  Watch detected immediately) and stayed this way for a few months (during that time, sleep tracking was not working). But then I got hospitalised, and the doctors performed Cardio Versio on me (a kind of electroshock under anaesthesia) to bring back the normal sinus rhythm - and they did succeed :) After that day,  Watch has been tracking perfectly sleep and everything health-related. So maybe check with your cardiologist if everything is OK with your heart. Good luck and success.

Hello, Mike_P1!

Thank you very much for the detailed reply and for the support tips.

I verified all settings, step by step, as per your suggestions. Everything is OK. Nevertheless, sleep tracking is not OK. Sometimes it's OK (like every few days. For example, yesterday it was EXCELLENT. Spot-on! Then, nothing changed /settings-wise/ and last night Sleep only started tracking after 2:30 am and I went to bed at 23:25h. Sleep focus/schedule is 23:00-7:00). It's all so very RANDOM :( But for many years Sleep was recorded perfectly well. I also used AutoSleep and it worked PERFECTLY well in tandem with Apple Watch. Now it is also totally out of sync. I have now uninstalled it as part of the troubleshooting. I upgraded from Apple Watch 5 to 8 and from iPhone X to 14 pro (almost at the same time, more than a month ago), and for the first 2 weeks everything (sleep-wise) was OK. Then suddenly, overnight (no software OS updates, no settings changed)…all went bananas :(

I'm in touch with Apple Support over the phone for more than 2 weeks now. I have a ticket and a link to always get back to the original support person. The case is ongoing. The issue has been escalated. Support even logs in remotely (screen sharing) to troubleshoot. No success so far.

Thank you and regards,

Kosta

Unfortunately, I guess I've learned that you MUST set up an unwanted sleep schedule for it to work. I don't have a set time I need to wake up, but for sleep stages to work, you have to set up a schedule. I listen to podcasts when/if I awake in the night, and that doesn't interfere, I don't think (unless it records the podcast as awake time--even though it puts me right back to sleep).

set up a sleep schedule, and it should start recording again.

Apple support (Applecare) is great for run of the mill problems or questions. They are not qualified like the genius bar people and even then--you need to ask for the top guy in the store. Applecare people listen to your problem, then they look it up and read articles on how to fix it. If it's out of the realm of a typical problem, you can't rely on them-- plus their job is to fix the problem there and NOT have you go to the genius bar. Get off AppleCare, they are just trouble shooters not like the geniuses in the store.

You may find this helpful. I use the Sleep app on my watch to track my sleep. It has worked consistently well over several watch versions. To get it:

  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down to Available apps.
  • Tap Sleep to install.

When you wake in the morning, tap AutoSleep on your iPhone to see your sleep data such as what you see in the photo below ... and more. My doctors and I find this very helpful.

I have the same exact issue!

I have Apple Watch 9 with WatchOS 10.1 paired with iPhone 12 iOS 17.1.

It is a new watch, and the sleep tracking for the first 2 nights after unboxing. But, afterwards, there is zero data available.

I have made sure sleep tracking is on (both watch and health app) , and Sleep Mode automatically goes on. My watch is always charged, and I make sure to fit it at my wrist properly.

I sometimes watch a video before sleep and i might fall asleep before it ends, not sure if that would affect anything.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

This newest apple update has changed everything. I am so disappointed. I would recommend that if you didn’t update it yet, DO NOT UPDATE.

How can I get my watch back to how it’s been for the last several years? I liked to be able to FIND MY IPHONE without going through multiple stages. I liked seeing the ECG on my iPhone and now it’s hidden. Why does Apple always try to change things and in the process ruins a good thing and what we’re used to. I am quickly losing faith in Apple after the latest update on my watch and the latest update on my IPhone 14 Pro. It may be time to try an Android. Goodbye Apple. It’s your own fault for messing up a good thing. It’s

This is very frustrating having my Apple Watch Series 8 intermittently tracking my sleep stages and other times not at all and sometimes just a flood bar of green. When is this going to be corrected? This should be addressed in an update to the OS should fix his issue.

I have done all the recommended steps. Sometimes it works for a day or two. Sometimes it doesn’t. It’s really annoying having to do this every night and not know when I wake up if I’ll have the data that I need for all my health apps. I have MS and other ailments and having my sleep stages recorded is very important to me and my doctors

Same here. I started tracking sleep 12/1/2023 and it worked perfectly fine -- whether the band was tight or a bit looser. Starting 4 days ago it inexplicably stopped tracking. Then I noted the watch needed an update so I figured it might be a bundle that resolved this issue. Updated -- still won't track. I've followed advice on this thread. Now I get a solid blue 'time in bed' but no sleep data. Frustrating.

I’ve found that my Apple Watch only records my sleep during the sleep focus schedule. Which is also annoying because if I’m up watching tv after my sleep focus starts, because I’m sitting still the app thinks I’m sleeping. 🤯 and once the wake up alarm goes off, the recording stops even if I keep sleeping! I don’t understand why it works that way.
