Why does my wife’s phone appear as “iPhone” in AirDrop?

We took a road trip! Yay! Now we have lots of photos between my phone and my wife’s. She does most of the social media for the family, so it’s my job to send her all of my best pics. No sweat, honey!

Favorite the best ones… do any edits I can to make it easy for her… bingo. Ready to send.

Sitting at home, Wi-Fi on, Bluetooth enabled, I select all the pics to zip over to her, tap the share icon, see her contact pic pop up on my AirDrop (along with a random “iPhone” that doesn’t exist in our house). I tap her contact and …. Wait…. Waiting…. Waaaaaiting…

Her phone is on and unlocked. I ask her to stop scrolling for a sec to make sure this works, but nothing.

“Kids! Can you AirDrop a pic to Mom?”

”k one sec”

*doo doo doot* (pic sends no problem)

”k sent one”

Hmm… what happens if I send to that random “iPhone”?

*doo doo doot*

Hey that worked! “Why doesn’t it send to your contact?” I wonder aloud.

”I don’t know. Maybe you have to ask Apple about it” she replies absently, focusing instead on posting all the great pics my iPhone 12 took.

What do you think community? Why can I only Airdrop to her as “iPhone”?

Found the issue. It looks like the only way iPhone considers a person a Contact is if you AppleID email is included in the Contact card. I added my own AppleID to my contact on her phone, and now it is working!

I discovered it by noticing that her iPhone only appeared when AirDrop was set to Everyone For 10 Minutes. Otherwise it was just her contact image in the AirDrop “Send a Copy” screen.

That’s when I realized that, despite all these years of marriage, Apple didn’t consider us very close at all.

Thanks for your help, TheLittles!

"Ok, I see that. So why doesn’t it AirDrop to her contact like it does to everyone else? I can AirDrop to my kid’s phone by tapping their contact. Consequently, their iPhone doesn’t show up as another device. Just the contact."

Where is She Seen?

So, do you see her or her device under one of the following (as seen in my image)?:
