IMac screen fell off

Apple iMac 27" Retina 5K / 32GB 1TB SSD / Mac OSX 2021

Heard a crash, and found my iMac in two pieces.

Ribbon cable is connected to screen but disconnected from board. Any diagram to lead me to plug it back and see if it still works?

I never opened it but bought certified refurbished 5 months ago.

Thanks.

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.3

Well it sounds like your best recourse is your credit card company. Best of luck with that and while this has been a painful lesson, I am sure you won't be buying a Mac "refurb" off of an E-Bay seller in the future. Going forward if you need to buy a refurbished Mac buy direct from Apple and if that is still not a viable option then buy from a reputable reseller such as Macsales.com.

If you are going to have the existing machine repaired, please take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, DO NOT take it to your local computer repair shop. Only use an Apple Authorized Service Provider so you know the work has been done right. If you do not know of any in your area, please click the following link to locate one:

Best of luck in the future.

I bought from eBay certified refurbished. the 2021 might refer to the OS they updated. I'm not making this up.

I'm not trying to blame Apple as it is refurbished - just trying to see if it is salvageable.

I filed a claim with Allstate which covers the computer for one year.

If you bought directly from Apple it would be covered by the original 1 year warranty. If you bought from any other source it is NOT a covered by Apple. Also, there is no such thing as 2021 27” iMac which leads to a possible lack of credibility of your post.

Finally I have never heard of the display separating from the chassis on a genuine Apple handled iMac.

The only time I personally know of this happening, was on a "refurb" that was assembled with sub standard tape. Actually it was 1/8" or 1/16" red double sided tape like sold by Amazon.

The outfit that did the "refurb" was NOT Apple, but rather some local strip mall store who also sold vacuum cleaners and stereos..

When this happens, it usually rips the connectors off of the logic board or off the back of the display and they can not simply be plugged back in. Sadly the logic board, display and cables maybe beyond repair and need to be replaced.

In this case your best bet, is to contact the seller and ask for your money.back.

I am pleased you have some coverage on it. Please note that although EBay sellers are NOT Apple Authorised, for all you know it is some chap working out of his bedroom.

Moving forward if you want an authorized reseller, please only use Apple or ask the reseller to show they are authorized by Apple. This way you know for sure the quality of the materials used is approved by Apple and you are getting Apple quality. When I by refurbished Apple products I only buy direct from Apple to get Apples full warranty and the opportunity to buy AppleCare protection.

Two loops of duct tape?! That's one of the lamest excuses for a screen mounting that I have ever seen.

Pretty obvious that Apple had nothing to do with that "refurb".

I think rkaufmann87 was exactly right about that seller being "some chap working out of his bedroom". In this instance eBay was definitely not your friend. 😡

I hope your insurance company treats you better.

That is not an Apple Refurbished iMac.

Apple would never use that SSD or Duct Tape the Display onto the speakers.

While Allstate might cover part or all of the cost, I would ask my Allstate agent how much the premiums are going to go up.

Again, your bet bet is to contact the seller and ask for your money back.

IMHO, the reseller is at fault for selling an improperly serviced device. Complain to eBay. That often gets results.

Any advert for a third-party reseller touted as "certified refurbished" should set off a glaring alarm. That has been source of scams for a long time. If you want a true Apple refurb, you buy it only from Apple. They are not available in all countries, unfortunately.

”Certified” by who, exactly?

The seller lied. If it were actually legitimately refurbished by Apple or an authorized refurbished, it would have the same 1 year warranty that all new Apple products come with.

Unfortunately, you’ve waited a bit too long to be able to file a successful claim agains the seller with eBay.

If you determine that the iMac is salvageable, you can purchase a proper screen adhesive for it at OWC/macsales for a few dollars.

You'll want to plug the serial number into this Apple Support website to determine exactly which iMac model and year you have so you'll know exactly which adhesive kit to buy.

Good luck. 🤞🏽🍀

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately Allstate / Square trade will not pay the claim. I appealed their decision twice.

Apparently they believe it was a bad refurbishment and they want me to get refunded from the seller. I pointed out the terms of the warranty covered mechanical and electrical failures but they just don't like to pay claims.

The seller was not interested in refunding me or repairing it.
