The first column on the far left only has grey coloured cells. How would I also apply the alternating black and grey colour pattern to the first column?

Note that you have 1 Header Holumn. Header Columns by design have different styling for the rest of the table. If you want that first column to be like the rest then you can set Header Columns to 0.
In the Inspector Sidebar:
Or in the menu: Table > Header Columns > 0.

Note that "Header columns" include features not present in 'regular' columns. setting Header columns to 0 will let the first column accept alternating fill colours, but will also remove any Header column features, including the ability to 'freeze' that column to keep it on the screen when you scroll the table to view columns to the right of the header column(s).
