If I have my phone number and cellular data on an android can I still use iMessage on a Macbook Air M1

I've never owned an iPhone but I am looking to switch within the next few years and I am planning to get a Macbook Air 2020 and iMessage is a feature that I am looking to use and I'm wondering if this is possible.

MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

You will be able to use the Messages app on the Mac to send iMessages to other Apple users but you will not be able to send SMS/MMS text messages to non-Apple devices. To do that requires using an iPhone with the Mac as described in Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your Mac or iPad - Apple Support
