Unlike iPadOS14 and earlier versions, multi-tasking (including split-screen and slide-over views) cannot now be disabled from settings. Multitasking, integral to iPadOS, has received a significant overhaul with iPadOS15/16, both simplifying its use and introducing new controls.

Key to accessing and controlling (or avoiding) multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” button that is found at the top-centre edge of the visible App windows.

You can easily manage and manipulate Split and Slide Over views on your iPad. To transform a Slide Over view, to Split Screen, Full Screen - or close the window/view entirely, tap the multitasking button at the top of the App window - and select the required view from the menu. Once you have closed the slide-over view, it won’t bother you again until you intentionally open another slide-over view.

To change a Split view to full screen, in addition to using the respective multitasking buttons, you can place your finger on the centre of the central divider (you’ll see a little grey drag bar) and drag the divider to the edge of the screen - then release; your split-screen view will become full-screen.
