These have to relate most likely to Energy Saver settings. Go under Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver or Power to modify the settings. One setting typically messes people up and that's the put hard drive to sleep when possible. The only time you want to use that is if you have no background tasks you plan to operate when you leave the computer, and not attached peripherals.
There is no such option for MacBook Air M1 with the subj process running at 100% CPU.
UPD: This option only appears when an external disk is attached.
