Ipad fell in water still had it now for 6 months

Got my son an ipad literally 6 months ago. A new ipad Air. I don't Remember what model. I've forgotten. We paid it outright over $2k and I dropped it in water by accident. I picked it up as soon as I could . Put it in rice & turned it back on a couple hours later and it was working. 10 hours later it started to have a back light problem. It turns on but can't see anything on screen. ? I was told it's upto $1k to get it fixed? Is this right for warranty?

First and foremost, your device warranty does not cover accidental damage. As the iPad is not water resistant, water damage will automatically void any warranty that may exist.

If you have benefit of an active AppleCare plan, being an insurance product, your iPad will be covered for accidental damage. If you have the cover, your iPad will be covered for accidental damage - and will be exchanged for a small excess/deductible fee.

Without benefit of either AppleCare or Warranty, for qualifying devices, Apple may offer a rapid exchange service for a renewed/reconditioned device of the same model and specification - this being in lieu of repair of your own device. The cost of the exchange is the same as would otherwise be offered for a repair - and is typically c.60% of the “as new” cost of the iPad.

You might be best advised to explore your available options at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assess your iPad:

What model iPad?

Rice is a horrible idea. Doesn't really do anything and there's inevitably rice dust that will then get in and turn into a gunky mess.

Pretty much the only way Apple does "repairs" for iPads is to replace the entire device, regardless of the issue. If it's for a battery service, the iPad has to otherwise be in good working condition with no cosmetic problems. If it was dropped in water there is zero chance it would be eligible for a battery service.

Apple has a standard "other damage" replacement fee for pretty much any kind of damage (in or out of warranty) or malfunctions out of warranty. There is also AppleCare+ which provides replacement service for accidental damage (with a deductible), and accidental dropping in water would count.

Not sure how much it would cost, but all models of the same type have the same other damage replacement price regardless of how much storage capacity it has.

You can check the price here at the bottom of the page. The highest "repair" price for any model is $799 for an iPad Pro 6th gen Wi-Fi + cellular.

Roughly, but it does get a bit complicated. I had an issue with my iPad Mini 4 that I bought new from an authorized reseller for US$299. Which happened to be (and still is) the same price that Apple charged for "other damage" replacement. Back then the retail price was $399 for 128 GB, and when I got it the model was old where Apple only sold the 128 GB version.

But for a 12.9" iPad Pro 6th gen Wi-Fi, the replacement cost would be $749. The new price varies from $1099 for 128 GB to $2199 for 2 TB. Apple charges the same replacement price which makes the decision to replace a bit easier for the larger storage capacities. For lower storage there might be a consideration of just buying a new one that comes with all accessories and full warranty.

Not complicated at all - as this is Apple’s standard method of dealing with iPad “repairs”.

As for cost, the quoted figure is necessarily an approximated figure; “circa 60%” is based upon Apple’s list prices - and not potentially discounted prices for devices that may be sourced through other retail channels.

To some degree. But there are so many different variables. The replacement price can go down over time.

Not sure what's the deal with the replacement cost being solely based on the model without considering the capacity. But it is what it is. I was frankly shocked that the 2 TB version of the iPad Pro 12.9" was double that of the base model. The OP might have been a bit unclear about the model name, but that's the only iPad model configuration that costs "over $2k". I suspect it wasn't an Air as the OP seemed to clarify it was a 12.9" model.

Bottom line.

Apple ONLY does iPad replacements for any in or out of warranty damages/repairs.

This is to expedite quick and speedy customer service.

If you purchased a paid, extended AppleCare+ warranty plan, accidental user damage is covered and will ONLY cost you a small device replacement fee.

If this iPad has NO paid AppleCare+ warranty plan, device replacement WILL BE very expensive, costing you, at least, 60% of that iPad's original full price, from Apple.

The standard, free, one-year, plan ONLY covers manufacturimg defects AND NO coverage for ANY accidental/incidental user damages.

Sorry & Best of Luck to You!

Any kind of accident is not covered by the warranty. Also, the warranty terms clearly state that liquid damage isn't covered under any circumstances.

Legal - iOS Warranty Document Us - Apple
This Warranty does not apply:

(d) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, fire, liquid contact, earthquake or other external cause;

Also - it's a bit confusing because there is no "iPad Air Pro". I'm not trying to be argumentative, but there is the iPad Pro and the iPad Air, and they've considered different models.

AppleCare needs to be purchased beforehand for the device before accidental damage occurs...not after. That would be like trying to purchase an auto insurance policy for the vehicle you just wrecked so you could get it fixed under the insurance policy...it doesn't work that way.

All you can do now is set up a repair with Apple and pay the repair price.

I’m assuming you’re in the United States, but if your not, that previous link should adjust to your location.

Those were the other damage prices for the most expensive iPad Pro models. The Wi-Fi only version of the 6th gen iPad Pro 12.9 is $749. Capacity doesn’t matter. It would be $749 for anything from the 128 GB to the 2 TB model, even though the retail price is twice as much. Apple has always treated replacement costs like that where the cost onLu depends on the model.

The procedure is to make an appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. The previous link has a link that’s says “Schedule a Visit”.

I dunno. If it's a current iPad Pro 12.9 2 TB, the retail price in the US is $2199 and the other damage replacement price is $749. That's about 34% of Apple's new retail price. I think the other damage cost is pretty reasonable, but then $2199 just seems insane to me. All things considered, getting the replacement starts making more sense with the higher storage versions given the flat rate pricing. With the base storage, buying new (if available) can be a reasonable option. And often with newer models available, it might even make more sense to get the latest model rather than replace with Apple out of warranty replacement service.

It is a new ipad Air pro 12.9 inch one of the bigger screens. And I called Apple they advised over $1k I'm like wow that's alot. I wasn't aware of accidental damage ? Where do I apply for that? Thankyou
