iCloud Drive Access Not Working - Browser or iCloud for Windows

Hi,

I've seen a few of these posts but no resolution, and no comments lately, so asking for myself.

This was working fine until 2 days ago when I noticed I had a queue of files waiting to sync on iCloud for Windows. I tried logging into icloud.com (which works fine) until I click Drive and I then get an error. Tried multiple PC's, browsers, and modes and get the same error each time.

Error is:

Drive has stopped responding

An error has prevented this application from working properly.

When I click details I get the following list (personal ID's redacted)

ERROR CONTEXT

I have it logged, but has anyone got a direct fix for this?

Based on my troubleshooting so far, it appears to be Windows authentication issue, as when I try from Safari, Chrome or Edge on my iPad or iPhone it works (but that uses inbuilt iOS auth even via a browser).

Tried turning Access iCloud on the Web off on my account and back on again, didn't work, and Advanced Data Protection is turned off.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I had the same issue! After months working with Apple Support, I stumbled upon the solution:

If yours was like mine, you notice that iCloud Drive page would load for a second and you would see some favorites in the left sidebar with a spinner below. Then after a second the error dialog would come up saying "Drive has stopped responding. An error has prevented this application from working properly. Help Apple improve its products by sending us diagnostic and usage information about Drive." with a details disclosure (which is where you got those logs which are similar to mine):

What I realized is that that spinner below the list of Favorites was the key. I went to my iOS device and unfavorited folders until I had less than 10 favorites. Once I did that, the error dialog no longer appears when going to iCloud Drive in a browser window.

The reason is that there must be a bug in iCloud.com/iclouddrive that has issues when loading more than 10 Favorites which is why it appears on all browsers (since it's a site issue not a browser or account issue) and why it doesn't appear in any browser on a tablet (since the tablet view doesn't show the sidebar where Favorites are).

I was able to reproduce the issue in multiple accounts. As soon as the 11th favorite is added, the error appears on the website. When the number of favorites goes back down to 10, the error goes away.

I almost lost all my data due to engineering wanting to reset my account to solve this issue, but thankfully I figured out the Favorites link and hopefully this will help others workaround this issue until Apple issues a code fix.

@SynnX

Hey there, I have the same issue (All iCloud.com applications crash when us… - Apple Community)

Do you have end2end encryption (advanced data protection) enabled too? Because that caused the issue in my case. Disabling advanced data protection fixes the web apps, but is obviously a bad idea if you value privacy.

It's a joke that this bug is in production for a whole week already and no fix in sight.

Hi. As I said, this is an issue across devices, browsers etc but only affecting my account. Other accounts on the same devices work fine. I’ve narrowed it down to a specific authentication issue from Windows devices, as the account works fine in Files and iPadOS / iOS web browsers.

it’s logged with support and collecting logs as we speak.

I double checked as I wondered if an encryption change had broken the primary key but it’s not enabled on my account. Never enabled it or disabled it.

Apple support have collected logs from iCloud app and browser to investigate. I’m my case it’s definitely account and OS specific as I have no issues with Files app or using browser on iPhone or iPad but my iCloud for windows or Drive access on Win 10/11 using Edge or Chrome fails.

what’s odd is that I can get into any other workload on iCloud - photos, notes, contacts etc AND I can get into a file from the last 3 files shortcut on the iCloud main screen from the Drive tile just not into Drive itself

yes, same problem for me, too, and it was quite annoying...to say the least.

Deleting the 'Favorites' on my IOS device (same Apple ID login, of course) provide interesting. I wondered why 'Downloads' was on my Favorites grouping in the Files App on my iPad TWICE. Sometimes files would download to one folder, sometimes the other.

Anyhow, to fix this iCloud crash, I removed both Downloads folders from the Favorites category, and then refreshed the Safari browser on my Mac and it worked - iCloud files app opened properly.

Interestingly, a few minutes later a Downloads folder popped up by itself in the Favorites folder on my iPad, the disappeared again after maybe 5mins. Strange.
