Video crops weirdly when moving it on the canvas

Hi,

I'm seeing something I've never encountered before and I'm not sure if it is a bug.

The job: I have a greenscreen video of a presenter that I am scaling, cropping and moving to the bottom-right corner of the screen (it's a presenter sitting beside a TV screen with the presentation running on the screen).

The issue: The video becomes increasingly cropped more and more on the opposite side as I move the it to the far left or far right of the canvas. As I'm moving it to the far RIGHT, I can literally see the LEFT side of the image cropping further and further towards the centre. If I move the video to the far LEFT of the canvas, the RIGHT side starts cropping in more and more the further I move it.

The potential culprits: I've narrowed the problem down to the following 3 things (I think):

  1. The video has a HDR filter applied (I got the following error message when dropping my iPhone 13 video into the timeline: "Adding HDR clip to SDR project - Bright content will be clipped in this project. To adjust the image’s brightness, apply a color correction effect or apply the HDR Tools effect to this clip." So I applied the HDR filter and set the mode to "HLG to Rec. 709 SDR" so the brightness of the video went back to normal)
  2. The video has a Keyer filter applied.
  3. The video has a crop setting applied. As soon as I apply ANY crop value adjustments to the video (eg. Left=30 and/or Right=17), to remove some of the unwanted artefacts at the edge of the green screen video, the issue occurs. The same thing happens even if I apply a 1px Top crop and move it left or right. But it doesn't happen to the top of bottom of I move it vertically - only happens to left/right sides.

It seems when ALL 3 of the above are active, the issue occurs! If I untick either the Keyer filter, the HDR filter or the Crop setting, I can move it as far left or right as I like and no "creeping crop" occurs.

It's bloody weird!!!

The workaround: I've gotten around it by placing the greenscreen clips into a Compound Clip, doing the HDR filter, Keying, scaling and positioning in there, then I've placed that into the timeline and applied the crop value there.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation but it's beyond me!

I'd sure appreciate your help or confirmation if this is indeed a bug :)

Cheers, Brett

It appears that you've encountered an unusual behavior when working with a greenscreen video in your video editing project on your 15" MacBook Pro. While I cannot directly confirm if it is a bug without access to your specific software and settings, I can offer some insights and suggestions to help address the issue.

The problem you described with the video becoming increasingly cropped on the opposite side as you move it to the far left or far right of the canvas is indeed peculiar. It seems that the combination of having the HDR filter, Keyer filter, and crop settings applied simultaneously triggers this behavior.

To troubleshoot the issue, you can try the following steps:

1. Disable one of the filters at a time (HDR filter or Keyer filter) and test if the cropping issue persists. This will help identify if one specific filter is causing the problem.

2. If you find that disabling one of the filters resolves the issue, you can explore alternative solutions or workarounds. For example, you mentioned using a Compound Clip as a workaround. This approach can help maintain the desired positioning and scaling of the video while avoiding the cropping problem.

3. Consider updating your video editing software to the latest version. Software updates often include bug fixes and improvements that could address the issue you are experiencing. Check for any available updates and install them if applicable.

4. Reach out to the support or community forums of your video editing software for assistance. They may be aware of the specific issue and could provide further guidance or escalate it as a bug to be addressed in future updates.

It's worth noting that video editing software can be complex, and occasional bugs or unexpected behaviors can occur. Your workaround using a Compound Clip is a clever solution in the meantime. By troubleshooting and exploring alternative approaches, you may be able to find a suitable workaround until the issue is resolved.

If you require further assistance or clarification, please provide more details about the software you are using and any specific versions or settings involved.
