Closed lid restarts MacBook Pro

Each time I close my lid to my MacBook Pro, after about 3 to 5 minutes it restarts. It turns off then turns back on. I know because I hear Apple startup sound. Why does it do this and how can I stop it from restarting when I close my lid? I want to get it back to "normal" (closing the lid and it sleeps not restarts). Thank you for your help.

So, here I am almost two weeks later. I spent a lot of time with Etrecheck and Apple's System Report looking for old startup programs and the like, and also tried every application to see if it still ran and ended up removing and reinstalling many of them. I can't say which one, if any, fixed the problem, but I've now gone several days without unexpected reboots(I was getting three a day moving from place to place inside the house).

I think when Sonoma comes out I'll do a completely clean installation and migrate documents and applications over one by one. Getting an SSD to use with Time Machine instead of an external USB drive using shingled recording should be a huge help (fresh Time Machine backup in a few hours instead of half a day).

Hey there imsnme,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned hearing the startup sound a few minutes after closing the lid to put your Mac to sleep, but we wanted to confirm if in fact your Mac did restart upon opening the lid?
  2. When did this start to occur?
  3. As you have a compatible model, the latest version for your Mac would be macOS 13.4. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

Great idea! Thanks!

So I did it. I created a new account. Logged in. Opened some applications like safari, pages, news. Closed the MacBook lid. And after a few minutes, it restarted (the restart dong sounded). When I logged back into the new dummy account, it automatically reopened all my applications. It however, did not save my writings in the pages app.

I am having similar problems with a 2023 MacBook Pro 16" delivered a few weeks ago. Most of the time (but not always), if I close the lid and carry the MBP to another room, I will hear the Apple startup sound either while I am carrying it or when I open the lid again.

If I look at "Crash Reports" in the "Console" application, I don't see any reports that correlate with each restart.

I am running Ventura, and it is up to date with version 13.4. I did just try rebooting to safe mode and checking for software updates. I do have lots of old software on this as I am a very long time Mac owner, and the upgrade path through time machine, etc, goes back to PowerBook G4 days, but I have tried to clean out much of the old software.
