What is Macintosh HD and how can I log on to this?

That's your system's main disk containing the OS. Every time you turn your machine on or restart ... any time you complete any sccessful operation you are using the drive.
It is strongly advises you not mess with it especially if you have no idea what it is. That's a good way to damage your system if not make it completely useless.
You put in the password you supplied when you completed the setup routine.
If you did not get the setup screen at startup you don't have a new Mac and it was not appropriately set to be resold. take it back to the seller and tell them you expected a setup screen at first if you thought you were buying a new machine.
