I have an old MacBook Pro (17-inch, mid 2010)and I love it but its not doing the business, could i hook it in to a mac mini and come into the modern days

Also, if you don't already have them, you'll need to buy a keyboard and mouse or trackpad for the mini. I'd suggest getting a trackpad because you're already used to using one and because the gestures will add functionality to your desktop Mac that a mouse won't have.
Mac-centric accessories are available at the Apple Store (obv), at often recommended OWC/macsales.com, Amazon and elsewhere.

Yes, you’ll want to buy a monitor for your mini. They aren’t expensive. Plan to budget about $100 or so for an okay monitor. Budget more if you want higher quality. The mini can easily connect to most monitors with either HDMI or with a Thunderbolt adapter.
Many people have been misled to believe older Macs can be used as monitors with a new Mac, but that’s just not accurate. There are caveats and special cabling requirements ($) that create more headache than necessary.
If you can't upgrade the OS, Mostly you just need a more modern Browser than Safari on Mojave, or High Sierra like Firefox or Brave.

You'll need a monitor, keyboard, and pointing device (mouse, trackpad) to use with the Mini. It would probably also be good to budget for one or two external hard drives for making backups of your data.
Most monitors these days take (Mini) DisplayPort or HDMI input. Some take USB-C input, and a few (high-end) ones require Thunderbolt input. The Mini has a HDMI port, and you can get USB-C to (DP, mDP) adapter cables that don't cost an arm and a leg from places like Amazon.

No. The 2010 MBP has just about outlived it usefulness. There really isn’t anything to do but let it retire with dignity. 😉
