Not sure this will work but remove the drive from use in TM preference pane. Then restart and see if the trash clears then add it back in as the TM drive and see what happens (the trash may return but worth a try).

Can't say I'm surprised. Fortunately you are in the right place now. Reformat the backup drive as dialabrain wrote.

Welcome. Is the drive partitioned, or did you create a separate volume just for Time Machine?

Me too. Yesterday I found about 100 old Time Machine backups in the trash bin going back 3 years. I am sure they were not there a while ago, I regularly empty the bin so where did they come from.

I am trying to empty the bin and it is taking forever. Apple help were not very helpful.
