Receiving HEIC photos - can't open

I checked my settings in Camera and "Most Compatible" is selected for camera capture format, not High Efficiency, which is what I read in a chat to check. I don't want to receive HEIC photos. What do I need to do?

iPhone 11, iOS 15

Hello Moon_64!

Are you receiving these photos in Messages? If so…

Steps that seem to solve the issue are:

  1. Please ensure that iCould Photos are turned on: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support
  2. I was asked to troubleshoot this issue on a relative’s iPhone. iCould Photos were turned on, but his iCould storage was full. So I used this Support Article to “make some space,” and the photos started showing correctly.

I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

I’m sorry to hear that. I have only one more thing to try. This is from another user in a different thread, but about opening JPEG images in Messges, so I’m not sure if it’ll work for you:

  1. Please turn off iMessages in your settings.
  2. Turn off iPhone.
  3. Leave for 1 min.
  4. Turn iPhone back on.
  5. Go to Settings, and turn iMessages back on (wait 1 min. after doing so)
  6. Tap on JPEG files in your messages, and they will appear (some automatically)

If that doesn’t work, please Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support.

I wish you the best of luck in resolving this issue! Have a wonderful day!
