If the account was "cancelled" you would not be able to log into it to retrieve emails. Maybe the account is not cancelled. Try logging into the account using the email provider's webmail page.

Here is an additional comment. Mail, or any other email app cannot connect to the internet to get emails unless it has programmed into it the URL to go to, your ID and the accounts password. You simply have not canceled the account from Mail.
