How do I back up a playlist to itunes from my iphone. I have seen some answers that say I need to right click the playlist and 'export' however I do not have this option. I only have various play options.

Are you using Apple Music on your iPhone? If so, you may be able to use Sync Library to sync your content to all your devices: Use Sync Library to access your music library across your devices - Apple Support
If this is purchased music and the playlist was made on another computer, you don't have the ability to sync from the iPhone to the computer directly.
