When you see a message that your iPhone is ‘indexing’, this means that the device is actively searching through contacts, messages, and other data stored on your iPhone to create a sort of index of these items.

This process helps increase search results and can also help speed up certain functions, such as Apple’s Spotlight Search or message searches. Indexing is an automated process and can take some time, depending on the amount of data that needs to be indexed.
