Thanks for your response, but the email address for my old Apple ID is an old work email address. So if I don’t remember my old password for that Apple ID and do “forget password” I’m stuck because the reset password link will go to the email I can’t get into.
If you don't have access to the Apple ID email anymore, AND in addition you don't remember the password, I think you may be stuck and then, as KiltedTim indicated, you may have to create a new Apple ID and repurchase all your purchases. However Apple usually has other ways to verify your identity, for instance our Apple IDs here have three challenge/response questions. I would first contact Apple Support before giving up and explain your predicament to them. See if they can help you with this.
Without access to the old Apple ID email and if you don't know the password, realize that from Apple's perspective, you could be someone trying to access another person's account, so they will first want to verify who you are and that you have legitimate access to that Apple ID. Of course you know that you do, but you have to be able to demonstrate that to them, they have rather strict security protocols, which are for all of our protection.
