DJI Mavic 3 drone 5.1K D-Log mp4 video not working in Final Cut Pro 10.6.6/macOS Venture 13.4/Pro Video Formats 2.2.5

DJI Mavic 3 drone 5.1K D-Log mp4 video not working in Final Cut Pro 10.6.6 or macOS Venture 13.4 or Pro Video Formats 2.2.5. Updated all those (plus Motion and Compressor) this week and now 5.1K D-Log mp4 video will not play on my Mac. Just shows as black. I was editing video in FCP last weekend in same format with prior version of all those installed and all was fine.

Unexpectedly, if I record video in 4K in D-Log mp4 format it will display just fine. Also 5.1K mp4 in Normal (not D-Log) display correctly. Just 5.1K D-Log mp4 will not display anymore.

Only thing I was able to try downgrading was Pro Video Formats. I reinstalled Pro Video Formats 2.2.4 and that did not help.

Have of course also tried several restarts of my Mac. Any insights welcome.

Forgot to mention these videos are encoded in H.264. Did more experiments this morning using a mov file container and using H.265 encoding. H.265 does work for both mp4 and mov file containers. H.264 does not work for mp4 nor mov file containers. The issue is only occurring in for 5.1K D-Log video encoded with H.264. H.265 encoding is working for 5.1K D-Log video.

This just started happening since one or more of the above updates. I have hours of footage I have shot that were working and are now not usable. The good news I have found a third party transcoding app that can read those files and convert to a usable format for the moment. But clearly some software bug has been introduced in Apple's own software.

> Yesterday I updated and now have the same problem

Did you update to macOS 13.5.1 and Final Cut Pro 10.6.8?

Although QuickTime Player does not yet play my sample DJI_Mavic3_5k_H264_10Bit420 movies, FCP does.

And if I convert them to ProRes 422 HQ or H.264 or H.265 with ffmpeg, they work also in QuickTime Player:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -timecode 00:00:00:00 -c:a copy prores422hq.mov

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx265 -crf 28 -preset medium -timecode 00:00:00:00 -tag:v hvc1 -c:a copy h265.mov

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 23 -preset medium -timecode 00:00:00:00 -c:a copy h264.mov

I have found the solution. ✅

But, wow, Apple this was very annoying.

Adobe Media Encoder > Format: Quicktime > Preset: Apple ProRes 422 HQ HLG

I was able to keep the same color information to work with the files in DaVinci Resolve 18.6.4 and use Color Space Transform nodes like I would usually grade D-Log footage.

I hope this saves everyone the time I spent finding a solution.

Cheers,

A

Hi, I am currently running macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 and FCPX ver 10.7.1. Download and use Handbrake, it's free. You must convert the h264 footage to h265.:

Add footage in - Change preset to "Production Max"

Preset>Production>Production Max

This is the important step! ---> Click on Video and modify Video Encoder to H.265 10-bit (x265). This will ensure colors do not break apart when color grading! Cheers

NOTE: In order to prevent this from happening with future project until Apple resolves this issue, you can still shoot in 5.1K in DLog but use h265 codec - not h264 otherwise you will not be able to preview in Quicktime and will play with Black Screen in FCPX.

it's December 25, 2023 and this problem still occurs, when I bought a Macbook in March 2023 without any updates - everything worked, both d-log in 5.1k and 4k120 frames, everything stopped playing after installing the updates requested by the MacBook. I have a Mavbook 16 inch M2Max, the highest configuration - this is not what you expect from such expensive equipment - and there is no support. but maybe this is an indication that the first version of Mac without the update worked. I played and edited all files normally, despite the latest updates - nothing works - I'm starting to wonder - why do I need a MacBook... if I'm buying it for professional use and video editing and it doesn't allow me to do it and makes it difficult.

Yesterday I updated and now have the same problem as you described. So much work and timelines are involved. Simply transcoding is not acceptable because some of the clips in a timeline are so specifically edited. I calculated the time transcoding and partly re-edit those clips, it will take me like 50 days!

Anyone got another solution?
