You free up space by deleting user data ONLY. Do not delete anything that's app or system related unless it's an app you installed. Move the user data to an external drive of you want to keep it.

If your problem is Purgeable data, Apple says it will be released as needed. I use the paid version of Daisy Disk to reduce purgeable. Purgeable data is sort of a space sequestration move Apple set as a benefit.

Open Finder > Click Macintosh HD in left panel > Click "Get Info" > look for purgeable

If you have the entry level smallest drive, this problem is not going away.

Troubleshooting Mac Storage Filling Up:

A. Single-Out this User:

What happens when you create a new Administrator user? do you still get this error? If not, then it it like an issue with the configurations of the current user. If so, then it is an issue of the macOS, in which case, you'd need to reinstall it. Once done troubleshooting with it, you can simply just trash this user you've just created.

B. Scan for Malware:

Scan with Malwarebytes for Mac:

Run a scan for malware, using Malwarebytes for Mac and remove what is found from the quarantine. This is made by *** time users of these forums, making it the only reliable Security Software for a MacMalware is short for: Malicious Software, which makes you computer act in a mislead manor.

If your MacBook's storage is filling up by itself, there could be a few reasons behind it. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check for system files and caches: Sometimes, temporary files, system caches, and log files can take up significant storage space. You can use a tool like Stellar SpeedUp Mac, or CleanMyMac to scan your system for such files and safely remove them.

2. Verify the size of your apps: While it's unlikely that the reported app sizes are incorrect, there might be some hidden files associated with the apps.

3. Analyze storage usage: macOS provides a built-in tool called "About This Mac" that can help you analyze your storage usage.

4. Check for large files and folders: It's possible that you have some large files or folders that are occupying significant storage space. Sorting files by size can also help you identify and delete any unnecessary large files.

5. Use cloud storage or external drives: If you have a large collection of media files, such as photos or videos, consider moving them to cloud storage services like iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

6. Uninstall unnecessary apps: Review the applications installed on your MacBook and uninstall any that you no longer use.

7. Empty the Trash: When you delete files, they are moved to the Trash, and they still occupy storage space until you empty the Trash.

Further, you can also try a data erasure tool, which helps user to securely erase data from any storage drive.

Hope it helps!
