I have the original iPad that I would like to backup to my newer iMac, but won't let me. It keeps saying there is an error in the reading or writing. Obviously my new iPad backs up, but is it not possible because the last update that iPad could take was iOS 5.1.1? I have a lot of photos and things I would to have on my iMac.

Well, this could not be done using an iOS backup. The early part of your post sounded like you were referring to an iOS backup.
So let’s start here.
If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
If you can get past that:
Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC - Apple Support
I understand it's not really all that well supported unless you might be able to find an older version of OS X with a version of iTunes that's compatible.
