Greyed out contacts

My husband just moved from android to iPhone. When he starts typing in the name of the person to email, the contact doesn’t show up. If he clicks on the plus sign, he can see it but it is greyed out. He has both gmail and iCloud contacts. I’ve restarted the phone and turned off short names. Please help.

If your husband has both Gmail and iCloud contacts and is experiencing difficulties with contacts not showing up or being greyed out when typing in the recipient field of an email on his iPhone, there are a few troubleshooting steps he can try:

1. Syncing Contacts: Make sure that contacts are properly synced and available on the iPhone. To do this, go to "Settings" on the iPhone, then select "Passwords & Accounts" (or "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" on older iOS versions). Check if both Gmail and iCloud accounts are listed, and ensure that the "Contacts" option is enabled for both accounts.

2. Default Account: Confirm that the default account for new contacts is set correctly. Sometimes, contacts might be saved to a different account by default. To check this, go to "Settings" > "Contacts" (or "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" on older iOS versions) > "Default Account." Set the default account to the desired one, such as iCloud or Gmail.

3. Contact Group Selection: When composing an email, your husband can tap on the "Cc/Bcc, From" field to expand it. Then, tap on "From" and check if the correct contact group (Gmail or iCloud) is selected. If not, he can choose the appropriate group to ensure that contacts from the desired account are accessible.

4. Contact Display Settings: Verify that the contact display settings are properly configured. Open the "Contacts" app on the iPhone and tap on "Groups" at the top left corner. Ensure that both the Gmail and iCloud contact groups are selected, so contacts from both accounts are visible.

5. Contact Permissions: Confirm that the contacts have the necessary permissions to be accessed by the Mail app. Go to "Settings" > "Privacy" > "Contacts" and make sure that both the Mail app and any associated email clients have permission to access contacts.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it might be helpful to check for any available software updates for the iPhone and install them, as updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address such problems.

Additionally, if the issue persists, the next step would be to contact Apple Support directly. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.
