Specifically, what does the dark gray fill around the white checkmark imply, versus the green fill around the white checkmark? And what about an Apple icon in this (2nd) column?

A mild correction. The grey circle with a white check mark means that the thread has not been solved, i.e., the OP has not marked a response as “Best Answer,” therefore, “Solved.”
An orange star will appear when something is marked as helpful, and you were correct on the “Black Apple.”
To the OP:
These three “symbols” can appear in a row, next to each other, for each thread.

The green check means the person who posted the question marked a response as solving their problem or being the best answer.
The grey check means a response was marked as having helped.
The check means Apple has marked a response as “recommended by Apple"
