Time Machine stuck

My automatic hourly backup started about 4 hours ago but for over 3 hours says "54.8% done(234.0MB copied)- Freeing space". Is my backup disk now unusable?

Wait for the process to complete. The backup will either finish or an error message will appear.

If a message appears, post back with the exact text of the message.

On first glance, it appears that your backup disk is close to full. Can you confirm on that?

Thanks Bob. No my backup disk had 80GB free. However the backup did finish successfully after 5 hours or so. I suspect it had something to do with the fact I setup iCloud Photos for the first time earlier today. While TM was running on my iMac, Photos was syncing my iPad photos to iCloud. This also took about 6 hours.

Glad that things finished OK, but puzzled about why space had to be cleared if you had 80 GB free.
