There is a red number "1" over the System Settings icon in the dock, but I cannot figure out what I haven't done. The OS is up to date, I did the latest update today. When I click on the System Settings icon, it goes straight to the Appearance settings, but there is nothing there that's telling me I need to do or change something.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah after I checked my software was up to date I checked for apps that may need update. But still nothing. No app update is pending. Also this red dot with the number 1 does not appear in any of the categories inside System settings. Only on the settings icon on the dock.

I get the same thing. The Systems Settings icon shows up randomly in my dock with a red circle with a number "1" in it. I know what it's supposed to mean and most times I find the update ...because it's obvious it's a software update ...or possibly an app update. But most times, like now, there is no update. There is *nothing* I can find.
If I ignore it long enough, it goes away ...maybe for months. And then it shows up again. With nothing to show for it.
What's also annoying about it is when I click on the System Settings icon in the Dock, it *always* takes me to the Appearance Settings section ..and there is *never* anything in there needing attention; it's all user set options. Why can't this notification be made to take you to where the issue is? Or at least the General Settings section ...since that's where the updates are usually found.

Except when it's not. Like the OP and myself have experienced. There is nothing to be found; no software update, no patch, no App update ...nothing. It will eventually go away over time ...
I'm having the same issue, with the Mysterious Red #1, as well.
Appearance is simply the default. You'll need to look around to find what needs updating. For instance, when I have App Store apps that need updating, I'll see a number representing how many need updating. But you have to look in the App Store to see what is needed.

Check the App Store. That's a reach as the numbers show up on the blue App Store icon in most if not all cases if store apps need an update.
I have seen the number only for it to disappear later. Some small glitch somewhere. If you're convinced everything is up to day I'd just ignore it.
Yeah I did check through the App Store app if any app needs an update but no they don't. I thought the case of a bug or glitch but even after I restarted my MacBook that red number is still there.
If there's a red number on System Settings, it's almost always for an available software update.
System Settings > General > Software Update
Yeah I did that update this morning. Now the message displayed there is "your Mac is up to date".
Be careful (PLENTY OF SPOOFING AS MY ATTORNEYS ACQUAINTANCE TOLD ME.) this can be MUCH. Call Apple with phone numbers in your Apple products with Manual's!!!.
Baloney. Only Apple can cause an update notice to appear directly in the System Settings.
