System Preferences dock icon has red 1 circle
On the dock the System Preferences icon has a red circle with a number 1 in it. It doesn't seem apparent how to get rid of this?

That terminal command seems a bit extreme, possibly because I don't fully understand it. I would rather exhaust efforts to try to resolve it using the normal gui first.
None of the System Preferences have a red indicator on them, so I don't get why it's showing a 1 on the dock icon.

The command line clears the Dock icon red attention alert.
An alternative might be go to >AppleID>iCloud and look for something there.
Sign out of iCloud and back in again.
If you aren't signed into your iCloud account, the OS considers it a "problem".
I don't use iCloud for anything if I can help it and always have my Mac logged out.
As far as the Dock, I pulled the System Preferences off of it so I don't have to look at that constant red dot. If I need to get into the System Preferences, I can always do that from the Apple menu at the top left.
Ok. Above all the icons in System Preferences it says "Start Using iCloud" and it has a blue Details... link. When you click Details... it shows a slide down window thing which says Start Using iCloud, and has the buttons Cancel, Not Now, and Start Using iCloud.
I click Cancel or Not Now. They both seem to do the same thing, they make the slide down window go away. That's all I can see about iCloud there.
I don't want to sign into iCloud or use iCloud at this time. Mind you, I have actually connected to it on here before, and then signed out of it again.
When you open System Preferences which preference has the red indicator next to it, for example Software Update might be alerting you to an available update.
Open System Preference?
Software Update.
If no you can from terminal.app copy and paste:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences AttentionPrefBundleIDs 0 && Killall Dock
In System Preferences no preferences have a red indicator next to them.
I don't see AppleID in my apple menu
Apple ID is in System Preferences.
Same problem, "Cancel" or "Not Now" do nothing to clear System Preferences red dot.
