There are many potential causes for slow loading of websites - some may be due to device settings, while others may be entirely external to your iPad and beyond your immediate control.

Before making any changes to settings, try a forced restart - as this will often clear an isolated software or performance issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the performance issue survives the restart, we can look for other potential causes within your control…

1) Are you using a third-party security App, such as Norton or other anti-virus software? If so, Apps of this type can negatively impact device performance while adding no tangible benefit to your iOS/iPadOS devices. If present, if only as a diagnostic exercise, disable and/or delete them from your iPad.

2) Are you using a VPN or VPN App? As (1) above, this can impact browser performance. Again, as a diagnostic, disable and/or remove them from your iPad.

3) Are you using Apple’s iCloud+ Private Relay feature? This feature routes all website (and other) network traffic via two proxy relay servers; this can sometimes cause obvious latency where this external service is not running optimally:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > [iCloud+] Private Relay > Private Relay -

If set to ON, switch to OFF; if OFF, switch to ON - then test your browser performance.

4) Consider changing your DNS settings.

This can either be set on a per-device basis in Settings, or can be set-up on your home Router - and in so doing extends the benefit of this specific protection to other devices on your local network. I suggest using one of the following DNS services - for which IPv4 and IPv6 server addresses are listed:

Quad9 (recommended)

9.9.9.9

149.112.112.112

2620:fe::fe

2620:fe::9

OpenDNS

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

2620:119:35::35

2620:119:53::53

Cloudflare

1.1.1.1

1.0.0.1

2606:4700:4700::1111

2606:4700:4700::1001

If changing DNS settings on the iPad, these are independently configured for each of your WiFi networks:

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi network name / SSID] - tap the blue “i” icon - [DNS] Configure DNS > Manual -

For your chosen DNS provider, add each of the four IP Addresses (two each for IPv4 and IPv6) exactly as shown above, one on each line, then delete any other addresses from the list; the sequence of the entries doesn’t matter.
