How do I set my iPhone to automatically substitute an em dash for double hyphens? It does this in some apps, but not when I’m typing in others, for instance Messages. I want it to do this universally. Using iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 16.5

Go to Settings > General > Keyboards and turn on Smart Punctuation. When I shut off Smart Punctuation, I got 2 dashes and when turned on, it showed the em dash in Messages.

If that does not solve the problem, you could try the "Text Replacement" option on that same settings page.

Just being curious , in 2023, who really cares about the ‘‘em dash, en dash or double dash?’ Pretty much people figure out what you text and punctuation is dead in iMessages. 😂

Lots of people properly punctuate text messages and find the use of little cartoons annoying. And, while, I do agree with you about the em dash being something most people wouldn't notice, we all have the ways that we craft our messages that we fell best express us and what we want to communicate.
