Open "Windows" jpg on Mac

I have lots of pictures from various cameras and camera phone that were put on a Windows machine and on MS OneDrive. Cannot open them on Mac. All other files (MS Office, etc.) seamlessly open back and forth between Win and Mac. Cannot find "fault" with the jpg files. Jpg files from iPhone work fine on Mac and Win.

Can you post a screen shot of the Get Info panel? Just so we can see exactly what you see?

Otherwise, we are just guessing at what could be wrong with the file.

The other option, is to try to upload one of the images here, you don't need to actually upload and post it. just try to add it to a reply and see what happens. If it works and it's added you can then delete it from the reply if you don't really want to upload it, or just cancel the reply post.

If its doesn't upload, it may issue an error that may shed some light on the issue with the file.

You can also try download Gimp its a free image manager, and should be able to open pretty much anything or issue a more specific error if it can't.

Yes, JPEG files are a universal format and I have used them for many years on various machines and OS. I get the very useful "The file “IMG_3857.JPG” could not be opened." message from a Mac. Having lived through various Big Endian - Little Endian and Win vs Mac wars this seems a bit peculiar after most of the file interchangeability issues have been resolved (MS Office, etc.). Mac has a tendency to add file extensions (often a .xml) for random software but that is not the case. Haven't examined with a hex editor and may do that next. Still looking for a solution and suspect it will end up being something really simple such as an EOL character.

Good suggestions. I do find that I can open Mac Word and import the jpeg file and it shows as it should. So far it is the "native" Mac apps such as Preview and other picture editing software that does not open the file from a OneDrive (or local copy). The Get Info looks exactly like the file information from a Mac Photo jpeg file. As an aside, the JPEG standard is widely accepted and the compression is still based on the DCT approach. Experiments with wavelet compression ~20+ years ago were better and had noticeable lessening of the blockiness of DCT compression. But cameras today have so many pixels and memory is so cheap that I suspect the JPEG or MPEG groups will not re-visit the basic compression approach.
