Black lines on iPad Pro 2018 screen

Hi there,

I have 1 pixel black lines on my iPad screen. But only in certain apps, like Chunky, Procreate, Sketchbook, and only around UI elements. It is not present at all in any Apple apps, like Safari, Notes, etc.

In Chunky app if I am using my iPad in vertical orientation, there is two vertical black lines around the window's top three dot button. But it disappears if I rotate the iPad to landscape mode.

In Procreate and Sketcthbook they are or it is in some case horizontal and only present if I open a palette, like the layers or colors palette.

I tried to make several a screenshots but they are not visible on them.

I also tried to force restart, sign out from and sign back to iCloud, delete and reinstall the apps and even resetting the iPad settings. But no matter what I try.

Could you please help me if it is not a software issue – as it seems to me at first, because it is tied to UI elements, disappears on rotation, etc. – then what could cause it and is it fixable?

Should I report it to the app developers, since it only appears in certain apps or is it an iPadOS issue since the problem appears around standard UI elements like the elliptic window menu and palettes with drop shadow?

Thank you so much in advance!

First, ensure that you have updated your iPad to the current version of iPadOS. At time of writing, this is iPadOS 16.5. Also ensure that installed Apps have similarly been updated from the Apple App Store App.

A screen hardware fault would be visible for all Apps. If the issue is seen with some Apps - and not others - something else is the cause.

You can easily determine if you have a hardware or software issue. A reliable method to confirm a screen or other hardware fault is to generate a screenshot (not a photograph as illustrated - although a photo is useful for comparison purposes) when the perceived fault is evident - and then review the captured screenshot image, the screenshot being transferred to another device for review if necessary.

When reviewed, if the lines are not present in the screenshot image, then you have demonstrated that you may have a hardware issue. If the lines are visible in the screenshot, the something other than hardware will be the cause.

Note: When reviewing the image, rotating the iPad screen orientation by 90°, from Portrait to Landscape, will ensure that the image does not coincide with screen defects if present.

If the test indicates that a hardware fault, a visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store is recommended - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad. This will likely inform your next steps:

If the problem is isolated to specific Apps, you might be well advised to seek assistance from the associated App Developer. When submitting a potential bug report, ensure that you include explicit details of your iPad model - and the installed version of iPadOS.

Okay, the 11” iPad Pro does have a different screen resolution from the 12.9” models. You may indeed have a discovered a scaling issue.

You would be best advised to directly contact Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-support/id1130498044

You should also submit a Bug Report via Apple’s Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting the bug report, fully outline the issue - and what you have discovered in context of Display Zoom. Be sure to include details of your iPad model and the installed version of iPadOS within the body of the report. Do rely upon the device and version picker alone to identify your iPad model and installed OS.

Every submitted report counts - as Apple may not assign resources to resolve the issue unless a sufficient number of reports are received from end-users.

Thank you so much LotusPilot,

As I wrote:

  • I have the latest OS on my iPad.
  • Lines are not present in all app,
  • and not present on screenshots (and as I realised this time they disappear whe try to record the screen)

I wrote to app developers last month as you advised but zero answer came since.

Lines are not present in all apps but more then one or two apps. They are not fixed on the screen. When I move a panel, lines move with it. If I close the panel, lines disappear. They appear somewhat consistently, because they are typically present around panels with drop shadows.

I tried to capture them with screenrecording but the moment ther recording starts, lines suddenly and totally disappear. Pretty weird. But this is why I think that this must be some kind of an OS bug which only happens on older (2018) iPad Pros.

Thank you so much again!
