Delete key on iPad unresponsive when I hold it down

Holding down the delete key only produces a single delete. My keyboard settings do not appear to offer a solution. I’ve tried turning on and turning off the “slide to type” feature as well as the floating keyboard feature with no success. Can anyone get me past this sticking point?
