iphone 13 using air drop

I have two new iphone 13s. They both are on the same wi-fi. They both have bluetooth turned on. They both have the latest ios update. They both have each other in the contact list. Why won't they recognize each other sitting side by side when you want to air drop a photo and you are on contact list only. You can do it with everyone for 10 minutes but that is a total pain. Apple recently changed it and made it a difficult thing.

Since it works when set to Everyone, I would concentrate on the Contacts info. Verify that the email in your Contacts for the other person matches the Apple ID on their phone at Settings and tap the top name to see the associated email address.

It should work with just the phone number, but try the email too.

You have not mentioned anything about your Bluetooth status.

  • Make sure that the person you're sending to is nearby and within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.
  • Check that you and the person you're sending to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If either of you have Personal Hotspot on, turn it off.
  • Check if the person you're sending to has their AirDrop set to receive from Contacts Only. If they do, and you're in their Contacts, they need to have your Apple ID's email address or mobile number in your contact card for AirDrop to work.

Since you have tried everything, all I can offer is the standard restart devices, switch off/on Wifi, and switch off/on Bluetooth. You have probably already tried this, but it has not been mentioned and it has helped others. You are correct that the received by "Everyone" has changed to "Everyone for 10 minutes", but I have not heard of this change causing problems like you are experiencing. I hope you can get this resolved and please update if you find a solution that works.

I already said that Bluetooth was turned on . I did not mention Personal Hotspot but they were both turned off. We were in the same room 3 feet apart on the same wi-fi. I appreciate your answer but the things you mentioned were all checked out and made sure they were right and we still could not get it to work. It amazes me I can get both of my ipads to work right Air Drop but the two iphones do not recognize each other.
