Is there a setting to prevent -deleting mail across all devices-

I don't want to delete mail across all devices?

Is there a setting for this? I cannot see any settings under mail accounts or settings in Outlook.

If I delete an email from Mail or Outlook (on my Mac) it also then deletes the mail from my iPhone and vice versa.

How do I prevent this? I want to keep certain emails in Mail or Outlook on my Mac, but not necessarily keep them on my iPhone. There was a setting at some point to leave a copy on the server which I cannot find and my email provider has now migrated to Exchange which is doing the same thing - deleting mail across all devices.

There are 2 types of email accounts. The one you are referring to is called an IMAP account and the emails are stored on your providers servers, so when you delete one off of there, they are no longer available to the other devices that use the same email.

The other option and the one you want is called POP. With this type each device downloads the emails from the providers servers. When you delete an email, it will just delete it from the device without affecting the emails on the other devices.

Most email providers offer both types, although the settings may be different. When setting up a new email account on the iPhone, it will automatically add it as an IMAP type. To allow you to change it to a POP type, the trick is that you don't enter the correct password when adding, then the phone will fail to find the IMAP account and give you the option to change it to POP as well as provide the correct password.

Thanks.

I have two accounts: a. Exchange email account (not IMAP or pop & I cannot choose IMAP or Pop because my provider has migrated to only using Exchange (Microsoft365) on their servers)

and I have b. an iCloud account. The iCloud email account (IMAP??) is deleting email from all devices. If I delete from Outlook or Mail on my MacBook, it deletes email from Mail on my iPhone and vice versa. This must be a recent Apple update ???, previously I was able to delete an email from iPhone but still have it on my MacBook in Outlook and vice versa.

Is there a setting to turn this off?
