My MacBook recently restarted and has been very slow lately

Hello, everyone!

Here's info about my computer: MacBook Air 13-inch, 2017 - Monterey ver. 12.6.5).

I've been using it for a long time and it doesn't give me much trouble. Yet, recently it restarted and I was curious to know why (I'm used to it being slow, but it doesn't crash frequently). So I fond the EtreCheckPro and so I decided to "check" if there's "Major Issues", and it found 2.

"Kernel panics" (what I believe is the reason why it restarted) and "Low disk space". I don't know if it is important, but i connected my iPhone to my Macbook to charge it minutes before it restarted.

Oh, I sometimes get that very common trouble of trying to connect my iPhone to my MacBook and it keeps connecting and disconnecting very quickly, but I already found the trick to solve that in this forum.

Ok, back to the main problem, I also have "ESET Endpoint Antivirus" installed but I feel that it only gives me problems. I only installed it because my college provides a license to all students. Sometimes the CPU percentage gets super high and the tasks that require more "% CPU" are the following (more a less):

  1. esets_daemon (at least 10%)
  2. com.eset.endpoint
  3. Google Chrome related tasks
  4. Window Server
  5. kernel_task
  6. mds, launchd, cloudd, and so one

Here's the Apple report when it restarted:

Here is the part of the EtreCheck report related to the Major Issues:

I'll leave the full report in the additional text thing.

Thank you in advance to everyone who took out time to read this and also thank you, Etresoft Inc., for the app.

What I see with first glance:

"Low disk space - This computer is running critically low on free hard drive space." You need to have 15-20% of your disk totally free and kept that way. The disk is over loaded. Being a very small disk at approx 120 GB you need to move as much USER data to external storage as possible; certainly the non critical stuff. Consider uninstalling apps you don't really need.

You need to completely uninstall your AV app. It's not necessary and can cause problems.

Your disk write speed is very slow at 54 MB/s; read speed is not so bad at 368 MB/s. But both are quite slow per present day standards.

"So my thoughts about the eset av being the problem we’re right! But I’ve herd really good reviews about the av. Isn’t it a shame removing it?"

No, it's not regardless of what you're heard.

"Also, will the write and read speed improve when freeing memory? Or it only depends on the characteristics of this model?"

Not really ... maybe. Speed is a built-in function of the drive. If you overburden the drive, speeds might increase if you lessen the load. But I'd not count on it. But then, it won't hurt to try.

You might consider operating from an external SSD. They are relatively inexpensive, and you can increase your speed greatly. My 2016 MBP reads at about 450 MBps and its a 1TB Samsung external T7. At the time, it was about $150US. That's actually slower than the internal drive, but the internal proprietary Apple SSD was not working well and neither did the OWC internal one. So, external it is.

One of many: https://osxdaily.com/2013/06/22/boot-mac-external-drive/

Keep in mind, if you completely botch creating the external boot drive, the working internal drive is still there. So you can always default back to it. You can later use the internal purely as storage if you wish. And you can "play" with creating the external drive as many times as it takes to get it right. Sounds daunting, but just follow the instructions precisely and you'll have a whole "new" Mac.

If you can tolerate Amazon, and you're OK with Samsung, this is a really good deal: https://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-Portable-SSD-1TB-MU-PC1T0T/dp/B0874XN4D8

Hello! Thank you for your answer!

Alright, I’ll clean my computer and remove some apps.

Thank you once again!
