ios 16.5 contacts are duplicated several times

Since the latest iOS update most of my contacts are duplicated 3 if not 4 times. The delete duplicates tab never shows up even though I am physically looking at quadruple duplicates. Is there a way to delete these duplicates at once?

You may have stored the same contacts in multiple email accounts.

Either remove the contacts from the rarely used email account or disable contacts from the rarely used mail account in the iOS Mail app.

Unlike some Android devices, contacts are neither stored locally on an iPhone nor in SIM. They are synced to an email account that you had Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other

I have the same problem. Since updating to iOS 16.5 my contacts in iCloud are now duplicated at least 100 times. I went from 600 iCloud contacts to 12,000. This is a problem on my iPad, iPhone and iMac. I have turned off contacts on my iPhone and iPad and restarted the devices. On my iMac I was able to delete/merge all duplicates but as soon as I turn on contacts in iCloud on my iPhone or iPad the problem of duplication in iCloud returns and all 3 devices again have 12,000 contact cards.
