CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

This is what I did to Fix my disconnect problem. Has worked for a few days no issues.

It will cost about $60-80usd. Returnable through amazon.

Buy a bluetooth wireless CarPlay transmitter.

I know it sounds stupid to think it will work, because the transmitter still plugs into the USBa on the console. But it worked for my wired CarPlay on my 2022 Toyota Rav4, transmitted to my iPhone 12 running 16.6.

Now I have wireless Apple CarPlay, which works with my bluetooth and connects when I start the car.

Anyone who has read the entire thread knows that I tried everything including an entire system restore on the phone.

I spent a day on the phone with Toyota resetting the multi media.

I had about 3 calls on the phone with apple sending them logs and system failure records etc.

my phone works in other cars, and other phones work in my car. this was the only way to get my phone to work in my car.

They said they know about the problem, and there's nothing they can do until new software hopefully addresses it.

That's it for me. If it eventually fails I'll post back, otherwise, this is how I fixed my CarPlay issues.

I was signing into report the same. iOS 17.0.3 didn’t fix it. Also, my new USB-C 15 Pro Max didn’t, either. To your question about Apple, you would need to file a feedback, or a radar, as it used to be called, in order for them to even begin to prioritize it. It’s not practical for a technology company to scroll through Support forums to find bugs to fix when they already have a backlog of tins of thousands of bugs reported directly.

That said, it’s serious and needs addressed by Apple ASAP. I was super disappointed that yesterday‘s iOS update, and a new phone connection, USB-C, didn’t help at all. I bought a new USA-to C Cable, two of them. Tried both. Two brands. Both connected CarPlay just fine, but in just a few moments, it was disconnecting again…

EDIT: it’s no matter, my wireless CarPlay adapter is still working perfectly, so I just plugged it back in and went on my way, enjoying CarPlay every day, even better than before, with the single exception of the added delay to skipping.

I know, it shouldn't work, but I've been driving around with no issues for about a week now.

I got something called "WQQBFF Carplay wireless adapter". But honestly, I just randomly picked one with decent reviews and a discount coupon. Look at all of them, get the best for you. You can always return it.

On the negative, using the wireless device there's a slight lag when switching songs quickly, but it's because I'm now relaying information from the steering wheel through bluetooth.

On positive side, I no longer need a wire, and most importantly CarPlay works. Sometimes I have to press it on screen, sometimes It starts right up with the car.

I talked to an apple service agent. The thought is that the software glitch has something to do with the phone's lightning connection. So, because I no longer have to plug anything into the phone, it bypasses the glitch.

Confirming it has nothing to do with Toyota.

Best of luck

Happy to report that jj1565 was correct! Any CarPlay transmitter will likely work but I am VERY happy with the WQQBFF brand one on Amazon. 6 days now, no disconnects. The bug is certainly a wired CarPlay bug then. Removing the lightning port from the equation is the best fix. I actually think this connects faster than wired, but I am not sure why. It seems like the phone registers that it is “time to send CarPlay data” faster to the wireless device. Using steering wheel controls for next/previous track has a 2 second delay but volume is instant and so is tap interactions with the screen and map while in wireless CarPlay. I love my 2022 RAV4 Limited again. Thanks for the tip, JJ!

Yup. Wired CarPlay in these models of RAV4 has been broken since iOS 16.5. I am thankful for a wireless protocol and workaround, but it’s a shame it’s not fixed yet. I am a longtime IT guy and had my colleagues all A-B testing their iPhones in my car on various versions of iOS the day it all broke. I filed an apple radar/feedback. Nothing on it so far. Every phone on 16.4 and back works perfectly fine. Rolling back is NOT ideal for many reasons so the way forward is a wireless dongle and hope apple addresses it.

Yup, we all agree this shouldn't be necessary, but a wireless carplay adapter is alot cheaper and less hassle than trading in a whole vehicle. Similar to jj, I am not sure I'll go back to wired even after it's fixed, but this is 100% an iOS / Apple / Lightning port issue, it's not on Toyota as their RAV4 dash software hasn't had an update in over 2 years, so nothing changed. Also (as discussed in previous pages), if you use any iPhone with iOS 16.4 or OLDER< it works fine in the RAV4. It's just 16.5 and later that is broken, so it was 100% a software issue on iOS. The Toyota garage will be stumped.

I talked with Apple and Toyota and did all the resets and sent log info to Apple before the latest update.

they might not be able to fix it because the Toyota media system is pretty outdated.

the dongle I bought works every time.

I just turn on the car, and leave my phone in my pocket.

if I need a phone charge, I just plug the phone into the middle console plug or leave it on my wireless charge pad, I haven’t plugged it into the dash USB in like 2 months.

the one I got is $62 now and is sold by WQQBFF.

if you look through it he thread you might see people got different ones.

good luck

Just throwing out there what has worked for me. I have a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid and car play started out crashing every few minutes then eventually would not connect at all. I used instructions from this video on YouTube to do a full factory reset and now everything is working great. Basically, you hit the start button twice to get it in idle (do not hit the break), then hold the "apps" button down while simultaneously turning the lights on and off 3 times. This puts the head unit in factory reset mode. Hit the "Init" option then "yes". Turn the car off and back on. I am now able to connect to CarPlay again and it hasn't crashed while driving. I am on iOS 17.0.3.

I spoke to a service manager for Apple. (very nice person)

Going on the obvious assumption that the issue is the apple update, he suggested that I do an iPhone Restore.

When you Restore an iPhone, you wipe it out completely. It's a reset with the addition of completely new download for the operating system.

Took all day. Complete and total back up on iCloud.

Then Restored the phone while connected to my Mac,

then went out to the Toyota; "forgot Carplay", used the heaviest iPhone cable, connected to my car, using "projection" in Toyota settings to get started and was able to drive about 20 mins with CarPlay working.

Not saying it's fixed yet, because it might mess up tomorrow, but prior to that, the dash would reset every 60 seconds. So, I'll advise if it continues to function properly.

The issue is iPhone because, the car worked with iPhone at the time of car sale, prior to iPhone update.

That doesn't mean that Toyota is blame free. Yes, Toyota should update its outdated software, But they are hanging their hat on the fact that it was an apple update that caused the incompatibility.

IOS17 will probably / maybe rectify the issue, but in the meantime, many of us have stopped wasting our time going to the dealer and contacting Apple. We bought a bluetooth transmitter on amazon, and continue to use apple CarPlay until the two companies decide to work it out.

Like you, I've got my Toyota '22 for a while, and I'm guessing this won't be the last time CarPlay will be "temporarily" incompatible and the transmitter might come in handy each time. So, for me, It is what it is.

Submitted a case to Toyota. Just wanted to supply their response :

"Thank you for contacting us.

We are sorry to learn of the concern with your 2022 Toyota RAV4 regarding Apple CarPlay and appreciate your contact.

After researching your concerns with our product team, we can confirm that there are currently no known issues with our multimedia system. However, it appears that the issue may be related to the Apple CarPlay app itself. We suggest contacting Apple as they are the manufacturers and in control of the app.

Your comment has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Beth

It's obvious that it's the OS, but as many times as it can be on Toyota's radar I figure the better. Maybe they can make some noise with Apple that the lowly customer can't.

Splurged a bit and got the Magic Box transmitter. Have had no drops or issues like before. There's a slight bit of lag with certain actions like changing a song on Apple Music, but it's only a tiny bit. Beats the heck out of Carplay being completely non-functional. AND I now have wireless Carplay.

Still think Apple should be held responsible for this ridiculous bug that they have not even acknowledged. Every article I see where the headline talks about some bug in the new OS I click on to see if they so much as mention ANY Carplay issues. And there never is. Very poor form by Apple and their dev team!

Aug 30, 2023 4:03 AM in response to pkornuta

Of course. None of us should have to buy a transmitter. But you sounded like you were looking for a solution. And I was letting you know, that you won’t find it at a toyota garage because it’s a software issue.

Yes, when the new operating system comes out there’s a good chance that the phones will start working wired again.

But I kind of don’t care anymore. Because I press start and the phone connects. So even though I had to spend a little money to go wireless, it’s worth it for me.

I never think about it anymore and sometimes plugging in the phone was a pain anyway.

In fact, Im pretty sure if wireless iPhone connect was offered at the dealership for $50 when I originally bought the car, I would have bought it then.

But with that said, we all agree, it’s not right to have issues after buying something this expensive and when it’s time for an upgrade I personally would opt for a car company that updates it’s software more often.
